1. Was macht Rikus Fedorashot?
1. What does Rikus Fedorashot do?
Fedorashot takes a snapshot of your running Fedora — a bootable live ISO. That is a single file. Written to a USB stick it starts a computer with your Fedora — without anything being installed there. From there it can install itself to a hard drive if you want.
Your running system is only read. Fedorashot writes a new file and changes nothing on your computer.
2. Einrichten
2. Setting up
Fedorashot kommt aus unserer eigenen Paketquelle. Einmal eintragen — danach kommt jede neue Fassung mit deinen normalen Systemaktualisierungen.
Fedorashot comes from our own package source. Add it once — after that every new version arrives with your normal system updates.
Step 1 — add the source. One line telling your Fedora where to look:
sudo dnf config-manager addrepo --from-repofile=https://rpm.rikus.info/fedora/rikus.repoSchritt 2 — einspielen.
Step 2 — install. Your system asks three times (Is this ok [y/N]): twice whether to trust our key — both times with the same fingerprint — and once whether to install. Answer y and press Enter each time. The key question only comes the first time. Everything Fedorashot needs comes along by itself:
Keeping it current later — your normal system update does it anyway. If you want to renew only this program — or if you already had a test version of Fedorashot and step 2 says “Nothing to do”:
Why a key? Every package is signed. That is how your computer can tell it really comes from us and nobody changed anything on the way. When it asks, your computer shows the key’s fingerprint — it has to read:
A45B7C39D3EECDD3D8B6E91B467AEE3D046D5857Danach steht Fedorashot im Startmenü unter System.
After that Fedorashot is in the start menu under System.
3. Freischalten
3. Unlocking
On the home page press Request unlock code and enter name, e-mail and country. The code arrives by e-mail at once. Type it once at the first start of Fedorashot — the computer should be connected to the internet for this. It never asks again.
4. Jeder Knopf, einzeln erklärt
4. Every button, one by one
Build live ISO (the round button in the middle) — shows a short preview with size and duration, asks for your password and then builds the ISO. The ring shows the progress.
Cancel — stops a running build and cleans up properly. No half file is left behind.
Write to USB stick — writes the ISO selected in the list to a stick. Beforehand it shows what is on the stick — everything on it will be erased. While writing, the progress is shown in percent.
Verify stick (checksum) — reads the stick back and compares it with the ISO. That way you know nothing arrived damaged.
Change storage location — decides where the finished ISOs go. Best a folder with plenty of free space, ideally on a second disk.
Delete old live CDs — removes finished ISOs you no longer need.
Fetch missing parts — appears only if something the build needs is missing on your Fedora. One click fetches it from Fedora’s package source.
Pro settings — shows the large folders, the virtual machines and the log with all technical details.
Language, light/dark, About — top right: switch between German and English, change the look, see the version.
5. Was kommt hinein? Drei Möglichkeiten
5. What goes in? Three choices
System only — Fedora with all your programs, but an empty desktop, like a fresh install. The smallest.
System + meine Einstellungen — dazu deine Einstellungen: Schreibtisch, Leiste, Programme so eingestellt, wie du sie kennst. Deine Bilder, Dokumente, Filme und Musik bleiben draussen. Schlank und sofort brauchbar — empfohlen.
System + my settings — plus your settings: desktop, panel and programs set up the way you know them. Your pictures, documents, films and music stay out. Lean and ready to use — recommended.
System + Home — alles komplett, samt deiner Dateien, Mails und Konten. Am grössten.
System + Home — everything, including your files, mails and accounts. The biggest.
6. Für wen? Zwei Möglichkeiten
6. Who for? Two choices
My personal clone — for yourself. In the running clone you log in with your own name and password. The ISO contains your account and your credentials — keep it safe and do not hand it to strangers.
To pass on — for someone else. Passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, keys and all personal folders are removed from the image. At start Fedora creates a live user who logs in by itself. When the new owner installs the system, they create their own account.
7. Grosse Ordner weglassen
7. Leaving out large folders
Under Pro settings every large folder is listed separately with its size. Unticked means: it stays out. Virtual machines stay out by default — they are often 60 GB and more. The space figure at the top follows every choice at once.
8. Die ISO bauen
8. Building the ISO
Press the round button, read the preview, enter the password. While it builds you can keep using the computer normally. When it is finished, the new ISO appears in the list Finished live ISOs. If there is not enough space, Fedorashot says so before the build.
9. Auf den Stick schreiben
9. Writing to the stick
Plug in a stick at least as big as the ISO. Select the ISO in the list and press Write to USB stick. Fedorashot shows which stick it is and what is on it — it writes only after your yes. Then have it checked with Verify stick.
10. Vom Stick starten und installieren
10. Starting from the stick and installing
Switch on the computer with the stick plugged in and choose the stick as boot device — usually with a key right at power-on (often F12, F11 or Esc). A boot menu with three entries appears; the first one starts normally.
In the running clone the icon Install to Hard Drive sits on the desktop. A double-click starts Fedora’s installer; language, keyboard and time zone are already suggested as on your computer. Choose the target, install, restart — done.
⚠️ Beim Installieren wird die gewählte Festplatte überschrieben. Vorher sichern, was darauf liegt.
⚠️ Installing overwrites the chosen hard drive. Back up whatever is on it first.
11. Wenn etwas schiefgeht
11. If something goes wrong
The build stops — the log is under Pro settings. Fedorashot cleans up after itself; you can simply build again.
The computer does not start from the stick — check with Verify stick that it is intact. Then look in the computer’s boot menu whether the stick shows up, and try another USB port.
Something else — press report a problem at the bottom and briefly describe what happened. Ideally with the log.
12. Wo liegt was
12. Where things are
Finished ISOs — in the storage location, at first the folder Fedorashot in your personal folder. Change it with Change storage location.
Das Programm — im Startmenü unter System. Entfernen geht mit dem normalen Paketwerkzeug:
The program — in the start menu under System. Remove it with the normal package tool:
sudo dnf remove rikus-fedorashot
